Something Most Deadly by Ann Self

Jane Husted tries to live her dream of becoming an international show rider, but life on the lavish Springhill Estate is more like a nightmare, and it brings to the fore an unrealized psychic gift.  Prior to this, ESP was hocus-pocus, and not something she needed or believed in. Now it could help her stay a step ahead of a killer.

Madeline Fanning, Jane’s best friend and fellow survivor of their tattered childhood on public assistance, is now a clinical psychologist on staff at a large Boston Hospital. Each woman  has fought tenaciously to get out of the swamp of poverty and free herself from the stigma of welfare.  Madeline is already attaining success, but Jane is still grasping for the brass ring, her life complicated by the snobbish, backstabbing elite on Springhill Estate.

Madeline recognizes Jane’s psychic ability before she does, and encourages her to use it to navigate the cutthroats and savage jealousy hidden just beneath the surface on the deceptively beautiful estate with its rolling hills, nineteenth-century stone mansion, and gothic barn.

State Police Detectives Westerlund and Russell are brought to the estate when someone falls into a diabolical trap intended to kill, and kill it does. The detectives face a myriad of oddball personalities to sort through: The Whitbeck family, owners of Springhill and inhabitants of the mansion; very rich and not missing an opportunity to remind you.  Lars Wallenberg, Austrian coach and trainer fresh from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Sam Noone, former jockey from Louisville Kentucky, now the barn manager.  Dylan Ripley, young, smart-alecky, full of wry humor and observations as he cleans stalls and cares for the horses.  Owen Flint, irritable, misogynistic trainer and coach whose temper is legendary; feared by horses and women alike as he struts around in tight breeches and impossibly long boots.  Lucinda Whitbeck, narcissistic, domineering, and pickled with jealousy over Jane’s superior talent.  Gladys Barrett, Lucinda’s grandmother, determined that Lucinda will find glory and her day in the limelight even if they have to stomp everyone else into the dirt.

Jane is shocked when wealthy businessman Brian Canaday shows up as an investor in European sport horses the estate is importing and breeding. Brian was an obsession of her high-school years, but so far out of her reach he’s in the stratosphere. She tries to avoid him so as not trigger memories of the dreadfully thin, poorly dressed ‘Plain Jane’ of the past, and ruin her new image. Knowledge of her seedy, impecunious childhood would make her prime gossip fodder for the well-heeled denizens of Springhill.

Genuine love story, no graphic sex, no forensic gore. Mild language.

Murder on the Danube by William S. Shepard

"Robbie" Cutler, a thirtyish American career diplomat, is beginning an assignment as Political Officer at the American Embassy in Budapest. He previously served as Consul in Bordeaux (where he was yanked out for his own safety after exposing a Basque terrorist leader, in Vintage Murder, the first in this series of Robbie Cutler diplomatic mysteries).
The return to Budapest of a prominent Hungarian-American, Janos Magassy, sets off a train of events. Magassy had been the leader of a resistance group during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. Before its members can meet again, Magassy is brutally murdered in a side street in Obuda. Given the murdered man’s national prominence, American Ambassador Eleanor Horton tells Robbie to keep a close eye on the police investigation. Working in tandem with Inspector Racz of Central Budapest Police Headquarters, Robbie develops leads in the murder.
The 1956 circle linked Eva Molnar, whom Robbie's father, a former diplomat, had failed to save in 1956, and the murdered Magassy. Included also are a currently rising Hungarian politician, Imre Mohacsi, a Ministry of Justice official, Attila Nemzeti, and a prosperous German banker, Attila Szepvaros. Their stories are played out in a continuing flashback to the events of 1956.
Complicating Robbie's investigation is the refusal of the Hungarian Government to open its own intelligence files from the period. Who was the police spy that betrayed them? The search takes him and his visiting sister Evalyn to the border fortress town of Gyula on the Hungarian plain, and even into the Hungarian ethnic regions of Transylvania, for a dramatic encounter with the reclusive Eva Molnar.
A socially adept bachelor, Robbie is much in demand at the many receptions and dinners given by the Budapest diplomatic circuit. He feels himself increasingly drawn to Julie Kovatch, the neglected young wife of the Australian Ambassador, Alexander Kovatch, a violent man, and himself an ethnic Hungarian who had fled that country as a teenager after the 1956 upheaval.
His romantic life complicates the mystery as Robbie gradually unearths Kovatch's 1956 past. Robbie's Uncle Seth Cutler, a nationally prominent former intelligence official, finds out from CIA biographic records that Kovatch is the brother of another member of Magassy's 1956 resistance group, the missing Csaba Kovacs. Ambassador Kovatch is also trying to find the intelligence agent who killed his brother in 1956. The trouble is that Kovatch is a driven but mistaken Count of Monte Cristo who is being set up by the real killer, as he investigates the banker, the politician, and the government official who were members of his brother's resistance group.
Post Cold War Hungary is a compelling place to be. Hungarian domestic politics involves an uneasy transition to democracy. The old Warsaw Pact intelligence connections are still there, as Robbie begins to suspect that the real motivation in the Magassy killing is a contemporary one. Is someone protecting money laundering by the Russian Mafia? Like neighboring Vienna of "The Third Man" period everyone, it seems, has something to hide, or to blame on the past. And the Russian Mafia will not hesitate to intervene when their interests seem threatened.

The Last Chance by Ramon Ballard

In the weeks preceding an historical presidential election, Horace, a patriotic 115 year old man honored for never missing an election and the son of a prejudiced southern gentleman must make a tough decision, whether to vote for a heroic veteran or to take a chance on an up and coming young black man.
As Horace relates the story of his life to a reporter and his friends in the nursing home, he ponders the people he has met, the lessons he has learned, and how they have coincided with the growth of a nation’s soul. Horace will tell you himself, “I have lived a long life, not an extraordinary one.” As you read this story of a man conquering prejudices developed as a child, you will note the parallels between the development of his ideals and those of a nation finally understanding the true meaning of: “All men are created equal.” Horace’s life might be more extraordinary than he believes.
It’s been said that your life ain’t worth a damn unless you touch the souls of those you meet along the way.  Horace begins life on a dilapidated southern mansion and in the course of 115 years, he touches the lives of extraordinary people, from a couple of young bicycle shop owners on the barren dunes of North Carolina, to the White House, the baseball diamond, Tin Pan Alley,  early Hollywood, and finally to a young black Southern preacher with a dream.
Horace’s life also reflects the influences of lost friends that have brightened his journey and lost loved ones that made his life worth a damn and ultimately left him, The Last Chance.

I, Senias by Samuel Drury Owens

Senias is the son of a prominent family living in first century B.C.E. Gaul.  It is he who relates to the reader the often tragic story of a mighty army of warriors called the Romans, who roamed the Gallic countryside murdering folks, plundering villages, snatching women and children to sell as slaves. The deep spirituality of Senias leads to his selection as an apprentice philosopher and thrusts him into the cryptic world of Celtic mythology.  On an eventful journey to the capital city of Gergovia, Senias meets the feisty Savrina.  Though opposites in temperament, a deep bond develops between the two lovers.

Once the conflict between the marauding Romans and the people of Gaul reaches the point of all-out-war, Senias observes the intense personal struggles between Vercingetorix and Caesar for dominance and power.  The last significant battle between the two ancient civilizations is fought at the hill fortress of Alesia.  The struggle for Alesia stands as an eternal testament of the determination, courage and sacrifices of the Gallic people in the defense of their independence.  An independence so fierce that it lies, ironically, at the very heart of their eventual defeat.

Affairs of the Heart by Borislava Borissova

"Affairs of The Heart" comprises of two novellas "The Last Secrets of The Ancient Island" and "A Love In Time of War”. In them lives all passion I have for history and adventures, time-traveling and thrillers, mysteries and great love.
In "The Last Secrets of The Ancient Island" a series of mishaps in an old town casts suspicion on a number of residents, provoking changes in an adopted practice of the underground world of relics. Ralph, a young graduate of a university proves the last mysteries of ancient National Park sites are yet unexplored by historians and archaeologists and discovers the personal secret of his older brother Michael. An unknown driver has a tragic motivation to take his life and that of another.

We were born alone, we die alone, but life is our chance to live in love.
In "A Love In Time of War”  first they faced the war… the love followed later. Peace was somewhere in between. One day he could have killed her on the other side of the front, on the next day he fell in love and what would happen in the day after it? All efforts to remain enemies appeared to be in vain. The borderline between their ability to hate or to love appeared a thin one. Differences abound in cultures, religions, languages, traditions and so on but a young Bulgarian girl and a Turkish officer met many more obstacles to overcome. Kidnapping her or escaping together provoking political scandal between the warring countries? His life had become like a Byron’s passionate poem and he entered in it madly and bravely. After escaping robbers intent on murder, Katherine Grant says, “I jumped from the frying pan into the fire. Before long I’ll be dancing on the coals.” The highwaymen were the frying pan; the handsome young Apache who saved her from them was the fire; and the coals? Gaetan.

Rage against the enemies of his people has consumed Gaetan from boyhood. The only use he ever found for any white was to test the sharpness of his knife. Forced by his brother to endure Katherine’s company, Gaetan tries to deny what he sees - the white woman has a man’s temper and a lion’s courage. She has an Apache heart.
In spite of hate, distrust and fear, surviving in the rugged country of southern Arizona and northern Mexico forges a strange bond between Katherine and Gaetan. When the bond turns to love, can they admit it? Can they bear the consequences?

Occupation by Jeff L. Dawson

September 1, 1939, the unimaginable happened. WAR! Germany invaded Poland from the west. Two weeks later, Russia honored her agreement with Germany and invaded from the east.
In the towns of Siepraw (twenty kilometers South of Krakow) and Tarnow (sixty kilometers east of Krakow) all was still business as usual. While the villagers feared for their lives, the Romanovs and Boirarskys worried little of the new flags hoisted in their respective areas. They had seen many empires come and go. The Czars, Napoleon, Lenin, Hindenburg and others. They never cared who was in power as long as the food supply was intact. But that was about to change. The Germans had plans for all races deemed sub-human; relocation. If one wasn't of true Nordic Aryan genealogy, then they considered those individuals a drag on the new order and its limited resources.

The plan of relocation was going to awaken an opponent that only resided in the "occupier’s" darkest nightmares.
